- "Pillboxes will defend the buildings they are near, and will fight in combat for you. They are small and cozy, if you like that whole bristling with a wide variety of machine-gunnery feel."
- — In-game Description
The Pillbox is a cheap, armored defense that can defend against enemy encounters. This protection is represented by a light-blue template which appears when players move or place the Pillbox. Once defeated in battle, it is down for repairs and will not function unless it is repaired it. However, it is costless to repair. A Pillbox is a little better than a Shock Trooper by damage standards, but has a Troopers range.
The War at Home mission requires players to defend 80% of their outpost's buildings. The cheap and quick building nature of Pillboxes mean they can do this quest in no time at all if quick completion of the mission is preferred.
Pillboxes and other defensive structures will not appear to defend against occupational forces if they are moved or built to defend against a pre-existing occupation.
- Real life pillboxes are basically just sandbags surrounding a machine gun team. However, in the World Wars, many concrete structures (bunkers or pillboxes) were built for more defensive capabilities. The shape of such structures were often much of boxes used for storing pills in.
- Building time reduced from 15 minutes to 3 seconds.
